The International Maritime Organization (IMO) continues its work to ensure the safety of the marine environment by regularly updating the list of Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) that use active substances and have received official approval. The latest version of the document, BWM.2/Circ.34/Rev.14, dated 29 April 2025, contains an updated list of such systems that have undergone a rigorous approval procedure. โ
The updated circular BWM.2/Circ.34/Rev.14 includes both Basic and Final Approvals for various BWMS developed by manufacturers worldwide. ๐ These systems have undergone a thorough evaluation by the GESAMP-Ballast Water Working Group (GESAMP-BWWG), which provides scientific and technical advice to the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). ๐งช๐ฌ
Each system on the list indicates:
The name of the system and manufacturer. ๐ท๏ธ
The relevant GESAMP-BWWG report. ๐
The date of Final Approval. ๐๏ธ
Specific conditions or recommendations for the Flag State Administration when issuing the Type Approval Certificate. ๐
Some of the recently approved systems include (as per the last pages of the document):
ERMA FIRST FLOWยฎ BWMS by ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions S.A., Greece ๐ฌ๐ท, which received Final Approval on April 11, 2025 (MEPC 83).
HiBallast BWMS by HD KSOE, South Korea ๐ฐ๐ท, which received Final Approval on October 4, 2024 (MEPC 82).
This list serves as a key resource for ensuring that vessels comply with international standards for ballast water management, providing up-to-date information for all stakeholders in the shipping industry. โ The IMO continues to work towards protecting marine ecosystems, while providing viable solutions for the shipping industry. ๐๐ฑ
For the complete and most current list of systems, it is recommended to consult the official document BWM.2/Circ.34/Rev.14 on the IMO website. ๐
