Leaving the ship soon?
Before you relax — make sure your handover is more than a checklist.
Here are 5 overlooked elements that can seriously impact the next officer — and your own reputation:
⸻
1. Overtime Log
If your crew has done overtime but the log isn’t signed or sent to the office, you risk crew dissatisfaction, delay in payroll, and complaints post-departure.
Tip: Get final signatures from Master and Chief Engineer. Submit electronically if needed.
⸻
2. Unresolved Defect List
That one busted bilge alarm?
That broken light in the engine room?
If it’s not documented and highlighted, you could be blamed for hiding it.
Tip: Update the defect list, label urgent ones, and brief your relief in person.
⸻
3. PPE Inventory
Many forget to check the state of the Personal Protective Equipment.
Tip: List what’s missing, what’s expired, and what needs restocking — especially firefighting gear and EEBDs.
⸻
4. Maintenance Follow-Ups
Did you open up the purifier but didn’t complete the reassembly?
Is there a pending PMS task for the lifeboat launch?
Tip: Mark it clearly in AMOS or your PMS software and explain why it’s delayed.
⸻
5. SMS & Circular Updates
Check if there were any recent changes in company instructions, safety circulars, or port-specific procedures.
Tip: Print them or save PDFs. Mention if you briefed the crew or not.
⸻
A good handover isn’t just a favor — it’s a professional habit.
It helps your reputation and builds trust between officers.
Leave like a leader. Not like a ghost.
