First aid on a ship for food poisoning

Assessment: Ensure the affected person is conscious, check breathing and pulse.

Hydration: Provide water or a rehydration solution (1 tsp salt and 8 tsp sugar per liter of water) in small sips.

Rest: Place the person in a comfortable position, avoid movement.

Body Cleansing: If no vomiting occurs but poisoning is suspected, induce vomiting (only if safe and the person is conscious).

Cold Compress: Apply a cold cloth to the forehead or neck to reduce nausea.

Avoid Food: Do not allow eating until the condition improves (at least 6-12 hours).

Monitoring: Watch for symptoms (severe diarrhea, fever, weakness); contact the captain for medical assistance if worsening.

Medications: If available, administer sorbents (activated charcoal, 1 g/kg body weight) or antiemetic drugs as directed.

Follow the ship’s medical guide (e.g., IMO Medical First Aid Guide) and request assistance via radio (GMDSS) if needed.
