On July 26, 2025, Extinction Rebellion activists in Amsterdam delayed the Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship from docking at the Passenger Terminal. Around 30 protesters in canoes and inflatable boats blocked the 121,878-ton vessel, carrying 2,850 passengers and 1,200 crew, citing the cruise industry's environmental harm.
The protest, starting at 4:30 a.m., led to a two-hour standoff. Police arrested five individuals for assault and blocking the ship, with two quickly released. The port authority criticized the protest as dangerous due to the small boats’ proximity to the 1,040-foot ship.
Last year, similar protests forced cruise ships to dock outside Amsterdam. The city now limits cruise ship visits and plans to relocate the terminal outside the city center to reduce environmental impact.
