Morocco Advances Maritime Hub Ambitions with Casablanca Port Upgrades

On September 21, 2025, Morocco marked a significant step in its maritime development with the launch of several key projects at the Casablanca port complex. The event, attended by King Mohammed VI, underscores the nation's commitment to becoming a leading global maritime hub. These initiatives, valued at approximately $577 million, include upgrades to the fish port, a new shipyard, an expanded cruise terminal, and a modern office complex to centralize port operations.

The fish port renovation, costing $120 million, aims to bolster Morocco's fishing industry, a vital economic sector. The upgraded facility will support 260 artisanal fishing boats and 100 coastal vessels, equipped with ice generators, a contemporary fish market, and administrative offices for shipowners. This investment is expected to enhance fish processing capabilities and increase export volumes, strengthening Morocco's position in the global seafood market.

A major focus of the event was the inauguration of the new Casablanca port shipyard, backed by a $250 million investment. This development aligns with King Mohammed VI's 2023 directive to build a robust and competitive national commercial marine fleet. The Moroccan National Port Agency is set to partner with a private firm to operate and further develop the shipyard. This move follows recommendations from the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), which conducted a public consultation in 2024 to shape Morocco's national shipbuilding strategy. The shipyard is poised to play a critical role in advancing the country's maritime infrastructure and supporting domestic shipbuilding efforts.

The newly opened cruise terminal, constructed at a cost of $72 million, is designed to elevate Casablanca's status as a premier Mediterranean tourism destination. With a capacity to handle 450,000 cruise passengers annually, the terminal features a 650-meter disembarkation quay, three gangways, and parking for 44 coaches. These enhancements are expected to attract more cruise lines, boosting tourism and creating new opportunities for maritime professionals in the region.

The Casablanca port complex upgrades come at a time of robust growth in Morocco's port activities. In the first quarter of 2025, Moroccan ports handled 60.8 million tons of cargo, a 10.2% increase compared to the previous year, driven largely by a 49.9% rise in transshipment traffic, according to the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts. Additionally, cruise passenger numbers surged by 46.9%, with 55,668 visitors recorded during the same period. These figures highlight the increasing importance of Morocco's ports in global trade and tourism.

For maritime trainees, these developments offer valuable insights into the evolving landscape of port operations and shipbuilding. The Casablanca port projects demonstrate the integration of modern infrastructure with strategic economic goals, providing a model for how ports can drive national growth. Trainees can learn from Morocco's focus on sustainability, efficiency, and global connectivity, which are critical skills in the maritime industry. The shipyard initiative, in particular, offers opportunities to explore careers in shipbuilding and repair, while the cruise terminal expansion highlights the growing demand for skilled professionals in passenger vessel operations.
