Medical Care (MC) - Regulation VI/4, para 2
Objective: To train the Master or the person designated in charge of medical care on board ships that do not carry a medical doctor to provide comprehensive medical care to crew members.
Target Audience: Masters and Chief Mates (or other persons designated by the Company). Usually requires a valid MFA certificate. This is the highest level of non-physician medical training for seafarers.
Key Content: Diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases and injuries encountered on ships. In-depth knowledge of nursing care for sick and injured persons on board over extended periods. Basics of pharmacology: administration of medicines from the ship's medical chest (typically Category A), dosages, side effects, interactions. Performing minor surgical procedures (e.g., draining an abscess, suturing wounds). Providing dental care. Obstetric assistance (basics). Psychiatric first aid (basics). Actions in case of death on board. Shipboard hygiene and sanitation, control of water and food quality. International Health Regulations. Effective interaction with radio medical advice services (Medico) and arranging medical evacuation.
Practical Elements: Advanced practice of diagnostic and treatment skills using advanced manikins and simulators. Solving complex clinical scenarios. Practical use of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment from the ship's medical chest.
