ABB and Wallenius Marine Launch OVERSEA Partnership to Enhance Ship Efficiency

Global technology leader ABB and Swedish shipping company Wallenius Marine have formed a new joint venture in Stockholm, Sweden, to advance their OVERSEA collaboration, a solution designed to optimize vessel performance for ship owners, operators, and managers worldwide.

Initiated in September 2022, OVERSEA combines a digital platform with a fleet support center service, aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of maritime operations. This innovative system integrates ABB’s expertise in advanced ship technologies with Wallenius Marine’s extensive knowledge of fleet management to deliver measurable improvements in vessel operations.

The OVERSEA solution collects and analyzes data from vessels across the globe, with experts at the Stockholm-based OVERSEA Fleet Support Center providing tailored recommendations and decision-making support. This enables operators to implement operational changes that reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, and enhance safety and reliability across their fleets.

Johan Mattsson, CEO of Wallenius Marine, emphasized the partnership’s foundation in innovation and industry experience: “Our deep-rooted expertise in ship operations and technical knowledge allows us to address maritime challenges effectively. Through this collaboration with ABB, we are excited to bring our cutting-edge fleet support service to a global audience, driving progress in the maritime sector.”

Tomas Arhippainen, Business Line Manager for Marine Service and Digital at ABB’s Marine and Ports division, highlighted the significance of the joint venture: “This partnership strengthens our successful collaboration with Wallenius Marine. OVERSEA empowers customers to turn data into actionable insights, enabling sustained improvements in energy efficiency, safety, and operational reliability for both vessels and shore-based teams.”

The OVERSEA platform leverages ABB’s Genix Industrial IoT and AI Suite, which harnesses advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to provide enterprise-level digital solutions. By combining real-time data analysis with hands-on support from the Stockholm center, OVERSEA offers a comprehensive approach to fleet management, helping operators meet the industry’s growing demands for sustainability and efficiency.

For seafarers and maritime professionals, this development underscores the increasing role of digital technologies in modern shipping. Understanding tools like OVERSEA is essential for navigating the evolving landscape of vessel operations, where data-driven decisions are key to optimizing performance and complying with environmental regulations. Training in digital fleet management systems and IoT technologies will be critical for future maritime careers, ensuring seafarers can contribute to safer, greener, and more efficient operations.

The establishment of the OVERSEA joint venture marks a significant step toward sustainable maritime practices. As the industry faces pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, solutions like OVERSEA provide practical tools for achieving these goals while maintaining operational excellence. Maritime professionals are encouraged to stay informed about such innovations to remain competitive in this rapidly changing field.
