The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) is thrilled to bring back its highly anticipated SCI Mountain Challenge, set for September 25–28, 2025, at the picturesque Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine. This biennial event gathers maritime industry experts, outdoor enthusiasts, and generous supporters for a three-day endurance race that reflects the grit, determination, and collaboration essential to seafarers globally.
Rev. Mark Nestlehutt, SCI’s President and Executive Director, remarked, “Participants in the SCI Mountain Challenge embody a deep dedication to the maritime community. Beyond the camaraderie and competitive spirit, this event powerfully highlights the daily physical and mental trials faced by mariners, especially for those of us based on land.”
The Mountain Challenge pits teams of three against one another in a challenging wilderness course across rugged mountain landscapes. Over two days, teams will hike, paddle, and tackle unexpected tasks, blending physical prowess with quick thinking. Each team is also encouraged to raise at least $3,500, with all funds supporting SCI’s vital work in providing pastoral care, legal assistance, and educational programs for mariners.
Success is measured not just by athletic performance but also by fundraising achievements. The weekend kicks off with a check-in and welcome dinner, followed by two days of intense competition, wrapping up with an awards ceremony and festive after-party on the final evening.
Since launching in 2013, the Mountain Challenge has grown into one of SCI’s flagship events, drawing strong backing from companies in the maritime, energy, and logistics industries. Unlike typical industry events like galas, this race offers a casual yet exciting setting for team building, networking, and demonstrating corporate social responsibility, all within an exhilarating adventure race environment.
