In a bold demonstration of Arctic capability, China has deployed five icebreaking research vessels near Alaska, marking the first time the nation has operated more than three such vessels in the region simultaneously. Led by the advanced Xue Long 2, the flotilla includes Tan Suo San Hao, Zhongshandaxue Ji Di, Ji Di, and Shen Hai Yi Hao. These vessels, equipped for deep-sea exploration and research, are navigating the Chukchi, Beaufort, and Bering Seas, drawing attention from the U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian military. With questions arising about the scientific versus strategic intent of these missions, the move highlights China's growing polar presence. The U.S. counters with its icebreaker USCGC Healy, while the newly acquired Storis prepares for its Arctic debut.
