On September 12, 2025, Chinese automotive giant Geely launched a groundbreaking inland cargo barge, Yuanchum 001, at the Hangzhou Qianhang Shipyard. This vessel marks Geely's entry into the maritime sector with its innovative methanol and hydrogen-electric hybrid technology. Designed to carry 64 TEU, the barge integrates liquid methanol and alcohol-hydrogen electric systems to enhance efficiency and range, offering a sustainable alternative for inland shipping.
The Yuanchum 001 is powered by a 150kW dual motor, supported by two 280kW methanol generators and two 258kWh lithium batteries. This setup allows the barge to operate in four modes: hybrid mode for high-load conditions, generator mode for long-distance travel, pure electric mode for environmentally sensitive areas like ports, and shore power recharging while docked. Geely claims the barge achieves a range of nearly 1,000 miles (1,500 km), significantly surpassing the 250 km range of typical 3,000kWh pure electric vessels. Additionally, it consumes 42 percent less energy than comparable diesel-powered vessels, making it a leader in energy efficiency.
Geely's methanol technology, developed over two decades, has already powered over 50,000 hybrid electric vehicles. The company is now expanding this expertise into maritime applications, focusing on green methanol production, carbon capture, and alternative fuel logistics. This barge represents a step toward cleaner inland shipping, aligning with China's efforts to develop electric vessel infrastructure, including recharging stations along the Yangtze River.
Beyond inland shipping, Geely is strengthening its global logistics network to support its growing vehicle exports, which reached 180,000 units in the first half of 2025, with electric vehicle shipments rising over 300 percent compared to 2024. The company recently introduced two pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), Jisu Fortune and Jisu Glory, designed to transport electric, hydrogen, and natural gas-powered vehicles. Jisu Glory, with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, includes specialized decks for hydrogen and natural gas vehicles, catering to European markets like the UK and Belgium.
Geely's advancements highlight the potential of methanol-hybrid technology in reducing emissions and improving efficiency in maritime operations. As the company continues to innovate, it aims to expand these applications across the maritime sector, offering valuable lessons for sustainable shipping practices.
