Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) - Regulation VI/3
Objective: To provide personnel designated to control fire-fighting operations on board with advanced knowledge and skills in tactics, organization, and command of fire-fighting operations.
Target Audience: Officers (Master, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer, watchkeeping officers and engineers) and other crew members assigned to lead fire teams. Requires a valid certificate for basic fire fighting (within BST).
Key Content: Firefighting organization on board: structure of fire teams, duties, communication. Strategy and tactics for fighting fires in various ship compartments (accommodation, cargo holds/tanks, engine room). Considering cargo specifics (especially dangerous goods) during a fire. Leading fire teams in conditions of restricted visibility and high temperatures. Use of fixed fire extinguishing systems (CO2, foam, sprinkler, drenching systems). Inspection and maintenance of shipboard firefighting equipment and systems. Investigating fire causes and preparing reports. Coordination with shore-based fire services. Management and control of casualties during a fire.
Practical Elements: Participation in complex firefighting exercises in specialized training facilities (simulating ship compartments), requiring tactical decision-making, team leadership, use of various equipment (including breathing apparatus), and fixed systems under challenging, stressful conditions.
