Medical First Aid (MFA) - Regulation VI/4, para 1
Objective: To train seafarers designated to provide first aid to render effective assistance in case of accidents or illnesses on board, using available medical resources.
Target Audience: Seafarers (often one or more crew members per ship, frequently officers) designated as responsible for providing medical first aid. Requires a valid Elementary First Aid certificate (within BST).
Key Content: In-depth review of first aid basics. More detailed assessment of the casualty's condition (examination, measuring pulse, blood pressure, temperature). Providing care for severe injuries: extensive wounds, internal bleeding, head injuries, spinal injuries, multiple fractures. Actions during acute conditions: heart attack, stroke, epileptic seizure, anaphylactic shock, severe allergic reactions. Infectious diseases: prevention, symptom recognition, isolation. Basics of toxicology and management of poisoning. Use of medical equipment: oxygen therapy, suturing (theory and sometimes practice), administering injections (theory and sometimes practice). Contents and use of the ship's medical chest (typically Category B according to WHO recommendations). Maintaining medical records. Procedures for obtaining radio medical advice (Medico Assistance).
Practical Elements: Practicing advanced first aid skills on manikins (CPR using an Ambu bag, spinal immobilization, etc.). Solving situational problems related to diagnosis and care. Practice using medical inventory.
